Halal export Opportunity to Philippines?

The global Halal industry market size is projected to be USD7.7 trillion in 2030, with a total addressable market of over USD30.6 trillion. Philippines has tremendous opportunity to become one of the world’s largest suppliers of halal food and beverages.

Philippines has the largest concentration of Muslims in the country and its strategic location in the southern part of the Philippines, close to the large Muslim market of Indonesia and Malaysia, the latter of which already has a well-developed Halal industry supply chain. The Bangsamoro Economic Zone Authority (BEZA) is aiming to develop a Halal Hub at its special economic zone in Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), that targets Halal food producers and the locators will boost the country’s share of the global Halal industry, estimated to be worth US$3 trillion. The country saw over US$500 million of Halal food exports in 2018. Whereas the demand by the Muslim majority countries (57 countries under the Organization of Islamic Cooperating) countries during the same year were in total, worth USD34.1 billion leaving a huge untapped market potential of USD23.6 billion for Philippines to explore.

Further, the Department of Trade and Industry is encouraging more small and medium-sized businesses to explore the global Halal market. In 2016, the government issued the Halal Export Development and Promotion Act of 2016 as a guide for companies looking to produce and promote their Halal goods. Through the Act, the government has provided training modules that have benefited more than 400 MSMEs and helped develop more than 10 Halal certifying bodies.
